Recap
Malfs win Cup marathon, reach G49 semisigorz malfunxionistz had to work long overtime and overcome kicking issues but in the end reached the Go-4-9 Cup semifinals at the expense of frontmodes Kobras.
In a game expected to end after 15 minutes at the latest, the Malfs' QB completed 7-of-13 for 157 yds and a 122.9 passer rating. 121 of his 157 yds came with his final three passes including a 44-yd TD bomb to give the Kobras the sudden death after 28:48 minutes of play - the longest QFL Cup game so far.
Also, the Malfs' RBs had a productive day running for 72 yds with 11 carries (6.5 yds per carry) while their field-goal unit had a quite miserable day putting the Malfs' success in jeopardy.
On their first possession, the Malfs started at their own 11-yd line and marched 75 yds with 14 plays taking 6:24 minutes from the clock. They actually reached the opponents' 4-yd line, before a 5-yd penalty and two incompletions made them settle for a field-goal attempt. However, the attempt that was supposed to be hardly more than a chip shot was blocked by the Kobras.
For the remainder of the 15-minute regulation, neither team crossed midfield and the game went into sudden-death mode in which the Kobras seemed to have the first shot at clinching a semifinal spot.
Starting from their own 20, the Kobras needed seven plays to reach the Malfs' 33-yd line. But a sack on third down got them out of field-goal range and they had to punt.
Four minutes later, starting from their own 16, the Malfs' QB had two deep completions for 44 and 33 yds all the way down to the Kobras' 7-yd line from where the Malfs elected to immediately kick the potentially game-clinching field goal. Indeed, the kick perfectly split the uprights but there had been movement on the offensive line. So, the Malfs had to rekick and again, the Kobras managed to block a rather short field-goal attempt.
On their following possession, the Kobras had their best shot at winning the game. Starting from their own 15, they marched 51 yds with 10 plays and reached the Malfs' 34-yd line. Their QB completed 4-of-5 consecutive passes for 46 yds to give his team a first down at the 38 but then, the Kobras called three run plays and had to opt for a field-goal attempt to win the game. However, their kicker missed from 52 yds out leaving decent field position for the Malfs.
With two runs, the Malfs crossed midfield and then their QB went deep to put an end to the Kobras' hopes to finally get their first win in a QFL-sanctioned game since a 35-20 win over the Malfs on 8 October 2010.
In the semis, the Malfs will host either Buvag's Lawyers or the Moderate Drinkers.
