Regular-season game: Malfs win shootout at Astra Dome (9 February 2012)
Season II, week 2: igorz malfunxionistz 42, Moderate Drinkers 33 (Final)igorz malfunxionistz (1-1) bounced back from their season-opening loss and beat the Moderate Drinkers (0-2) 42-33 in a thrilling shootout at the Astra Dome.
The Malfs' QB had a career day setting three new QFL regular-season records completing 31 of his 40 pass attempts for 362 yds and two new team records completing 77.5 percent of his passes and registering a 129.4 passer rating. With his three TD passes, he tied another team record.
In a game with four lead changes in the second half, the Malfs' reclaimed the lead for good on a 9-yd TD run with 3:24 minutes left to play. After forcing a turnover on downs sacking the Drinkers' QB at his own 5-yd line, the Malfs added a 5-yd TD pass plus two-point conversion to put the game out of reach.
With 6:24 left to play, the Drinkers took a 33-28 lead on a 4-yd TD pass but then the Malfs were aided by two 15-yd personal fouls on their last go-ahead drive.
The Malfs took an early 14-0 lead with their first two possession capped by a 24-yd run and a 9-yd pass. The Drinkers then scored three unanswered TDs but missed two extra points which proved costly. Had the Drinkers made those extra points, the game might have been tied at 35 in its late stages and sent into overtime.
Both teams had only one giveaway each. The Drinkers lost a fumble at their own 19 late in the third quarter. With the next play, the Malfs' QB threw a TD pass to give his team a 28-19 lead. The Malfs lost a fumble deep inside the Drinkers' red zone when leading 14-0. On their ensuing possession, the Drinkers cut their deficit in half.
Both offenses were also very efficient in the red zone where the Malfs scored TDs on 5-of-6 occasions while the Drinkers converted each of their four opportunities.
The Malfs' kicker missed the only field-goal attempt of the day from 34 yds out in the middle of the second quarter making this the first game without a field goal since the Malfs' last year's season opener when they beat the Lübeck Bay Seagulls.
The Drinkers' QB threw for 176 yds and three scores, their RBs ran for 232 yds and a pair of TDs. Their pass rushers registered seven sacks but failed to get to the QB during the last 26 minutes of the game.
The Drinkers showed significant improvement over their season-opening blowout loss but need to find their winning ways quickly to keep their fans' drinking moderate.
