Recap
dieselz' last-gasp catch at The StationTheir QB sent the home crowd roaring when he threw his only TD pass with 12 seconds left on the clock to give zugschefz dieselz (2-1) an improbable 31-30 comeback win over the Mighty Beagles of Angedair (1-2).
The Beagles extended their lead to 13 points for the second time in the game on a 5-yd TD pass with the final play of the third quarter and the game seemed to be all but over when the dieselz went for a 4th-and-6 in the opponents' red zone and fell 1 yd short of a new first down at the end of a seven-minute drive.
But the Beagles lost a fumble on the first play of their ensuing possession and the dieselz' RB ran in for a 3-yd score on the followig play to cut their deficit to six with seven minutes remaining.
The Beagles then moved the ball 48 yds to the dieselz' 32-yd line eating up five minutes from the clock but a false-start penalty cancelled out a game-clinching 50-yd field-goal attempt. Rather than opt for a punt to give the dieselz a long field with two minutes and only one timeout left, they went for a 55-yd field-goal attempt which went wide.
Led by interim coach sfHawk filling in for head coach zugschef, the dieselz reached the Beagles' 21 and spent their final timeout with 36 seconds left on the clock. Then, their QB took over. First, he threw a 16-yd completion to the sideline where the receiver went out of bounds to stop the clock with 24 seconds left to play. Then, he found a receiver right on the goal line to complete their biggest comeback in team history.
The Beagles tried a miraculous comeback on their own during their kick return but their second lateral pass fell to the ground and bounced out of bounds.
The dieselz took a 10-3 lead on a 3-yd TD run late in the first and a 28-yd field goal early in the second quarter. The Beagles took a 16-10 halftime lead on a 5-yd TD run and two late field goals.
Even though the dieselz' QB turned out the hero of the day, it was his Beagles' counterpart who had stellar numbers completing 17-of-21 for 187 yds and a pair of TDs with a rating of 135.5. His TDs gave the Beagles two 13-point leads in the third quarter.
In between, it was the dieselz' RB who delivered the first play of the day with a stunning 88-yd TD run, the longest play in franchise history. The dieselz' RBs finished the game with 294 yds and three scores.
