Beasts win wild card, dieselz lucky losers

The dieselz defense held the league's no. 1 offense to 185 yds but the Dicey Beasts (4-2) still beat zugschefz dieselz (3-3) by a score of 14-12 at The Station to win their third straight game and clinch the first wild card.

With five minutes left to play, the dieselz took the minimum lead on a 52-yd FG, but on the two-minute mark, the Beasts' kicker replied with the game-winning 20-yd FG. The Beasts' defense then forced a four-and-out to clinch the game and a playoff spot.

But also the home crowd was jubilant when the news arrived that frontmodes Kobras lost to silentsound's Silentknights, MoRe's Moles beat the SimKonville Fraggles and the Lübeck Bay Seagulls lost to the Prussian Warriors. With the Moles in second place of the Gothic Division, the dieselz went through to the playoffs on the strength-of-victory tiebreaker.

A defensive play by the Beasts made the difference in this low scoring case. Tied at 3 with 12 seconds left in the first half, a defender stopped a dieselz ball-carrier in the end zone for a 2-yd loss and a safety.

The dieselz' kicker connected on two field-goal attempts of 50 yds or longer as he capped the dieselz' opening drive with a 50-yarder. However, he also had a bad miss from 24 yds out in the second quarter and from 44 yds out early in the fourth.

The Beasts' kicker also scored a long FG when he capped the Beasts' first possession with a 57-yarder. Early in the second quarter, he had a 51-yarder blocked.

The only touchdowns came in the third quarter when the Beasts scored on a 35-yd run before the dieselz immediately replied with their RB running home from 53 yds out on the second play of their ensuing possession. But he failed to run in the two-point-conversion attempt that would have tied the game.

The dieselz' defenders registered two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery while their Beasts' counterparts contributed four sacks, an interception and a safety to their teams' win.

The Beasts will travel to Stanley Park for another meeting with duffeldoffel's Reds in their divisional playoff game while zugschefz dieselz will try to repeat their season-opening win at the Prussian Warriors.
