Reds clinch Australian title

duffeldoffel's Reds (4-1) clinched their playoff spot and the Australian division title with a 57-27 blowout win against MoRe's Moles (2-3).

The Reds' QB threw for 280 yds and two TDs and their RBs added three more scores as the only non-Austrian franchise aligned to the Australian Division clinched the division crown. The league's no. 1 defense contributed five sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a safety to the Reds' fourth consecutive win.

The Moles' most succesful unit were the special teams who scored TDs on a blocked punt and a 93-yd kickoff return. But they also failed to recover a Reds' onside kick and allowed a punt-return TD and their kicker missed an extra point and a 48-yd field goal that could have made it a one-possession game.

The game began favorably for the Moles who forced a three-and-out on the Reds' opening possession and blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone for a TD. But the Reds replied with an 83-yd scoring drive capped by a 23-yd TD run and the Moles' next three possessions ended in disaster.

The Moles had moved the ball 46 yds when a screen pass was picked off at the 31-yd line and returned 36 yds plus 15 yds for a personal foul. The Reds took advantage of the short field taking the lead for good on a 6-yd run. Less than two minutes later, the Reds extended their lead on a 79-yd punt return. The Moles then squandered another scoring opportunity when a pass was picked off at the Reds' 10 and returned 22 yds. The Reds capitalized by driving 68 yds to another TD run.

In the third quarter the Moles had a good chance to come back into the game. The Moles covered 59 yds with two runs to cut their deficit to 10 points and quickly got the ball back in Reds' territory with an interception. However, the Reds forced a three-and-out and the Moles' kicker missed a field-goal attempt from 48 yds out.

Instead, the Reds went on to score two more TDs and a FG and their defense added two points with a sack in the end zone. The Moles' 93-yd kickoff return in between was merely another consolation touchdown.

The Moles QB completed only six passes for 98 yds throughout the game but he hit a receiver for a 35-yd TD in the second quarter and later had a 37-yd completion.

The Moles have lost three-in-a-row and remained winless on the road after starting the season 2-0. In order to still make the playoffs, they need a win against SimKonville Fraggles in their regular-season finale and help from silentsound's Silentknights (against frontmodes Kobras) and zugschefz dieselz (against the Dicey Beasts).
